Alex Hales crunched his way to the top of the Big Bash League’s run chart on Saturday with a 45-ball 77 as English players closed a World Cup-winning 2022 in style.

Hales, a member of England’s victorious Twenty20 team on Australian soil in mid-November, took his competition tally of runs to 245 before being caught on the boundary from the first ball of the final over.

His aggressive innings helped home team Sydney Thunder pile up 228 for six, the BBL’s fourth highest total, putting them on course for a huge 62-run victory over Hobart Hurricanes in Albury.
