Social media has poked fun at Marnus Labuschagne after he was dismissed in rather bizarre circumstances in the first session on day one of the final Ashes Test.

The world No 1-ranked Test batsman had helped Australia recover from 12 for three and lead the fightback from the hosts in a 50-run partnership with Travis Head.

Labuschagne had counterpunched effectively with some glorious boundaries, but the duo’s eventual 71-run stand was brought to a sudden end with a bizarre dismissal round his legs.

Marnus Labuschagne had a dismissal to forget after being bowled in comical fashion

The Australia batsman moved across his stumps to try and put pressure on Stuart Broad

But he then appeared to slip as he tried to nudge the first ball of Broad’s ninth over to leg side

Australia’s No 3 appeared keen to apply pressure from the first ball of Stuart Broad’s ninth over of the innings.

But he stepped too far across his stumps trying to work the ball into the leg side and saw his middle stump removed as he slipped. Labuschagne then ended the comical dismissal by falling flat on his face as Broad let out a huge roar in celebration.

Pat Cummins and Steve Smith – dismissed for a second-ball duck by Ollie Robinson inside the first hour at the Blundstone Arena – were seen chuckling at the dismissal when watching the replay on a laptop in the dressing room.

And social media reacted to Labuschagne’s dismissal, with one user stating simply: ‘That could be one of the worst shots I have ever seen’.

Labuschagne was then in an almighty tangle and was subsequently bowled by Broad

He then fell flat on his face to complete what had been an embarrassing dismissal for him

Meanwhile another added: ‘Don’t even care if we go on to lose this series 4-0 now.

‘Watching Marnus Labuschagne get out whilst face planting the pitch has made all the long nights and destroyed sleep patterns completely worth it.’

Another meanwhile said: ‘This is the most Marnus Labuschagne way to get out then I have ever seen. He could have also yelped “NO RUNNN…”‘

Others saw the entertainment value in his dismissal, adding: ‘Will never get tired of seeing labuschagne lying on the floor after being bowled!’ while another said: ‘Marnus Labuschagne is definitely the most entertaining cricket on field right now, be it with bat or while fielding.’

The BBC’s Alison Mitchell meanwhile added: ‘Only Labuschagne could fall over in such extravagant way.’

Labuschagne’s dismissal 10 minutes before the break summed up a stunning first session for the tourists. David Warner was dismissed for a 22-ball duck before Usman Khawaja was caught in the slips.

Smith then fell to Ollie Robinson before Head and Labuschagne’s fightback. Head made a century while Cameron Green then hit 74.
