Test captain Cummins mourning the death of his mother, Maria

Ahmedabad: A pall of sadness has descended on the Australian team in Ahmedabad at the news that captain Pat Cummins’ mother, Maria, died at home in Sydney earlier on Friday.

The Australians will wear black armbands in recognition of Maria, and grateful in the knowledge that Cummins and the rest of his family had precious time with Maria during her last days.

In his contact with the team camp over recent days, Cummins relayed the fact he had felt incredibly supported in making the call to leave the tour after the Delhi Test to be by Maria’s side, missing the matches in Indore and Ahmedabad as a consequence. The move has been praised by Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird, who is in India with the team this week.

It had been a long road of more than a year since Maria’s breast cancer returned.
