SINGAPORE – One of the most cruel things in sport is to be so close to ultimate victory, and then have it ripped from you.
In the last minute.
And that was exactly what the Singapore Slingers experienced as they lost 84-81 to CLS Knights Indonesia in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) Finals title decider despite leading for most of the encounter.
The Knight won the best-of-five series 3-2.
The heartbreaking loss means they have now lost three Finals in four year and their hunt for that elusive first ABL title continues into the 10th season next term.
The Knights will celebrate their first championship and ironically, it was former Slinger Wong Wei Long who delivered the dagger to the heart with the go-ahead triple.
He was backed by Maxie Esho’s 25 points, Douglas Herring Jr’s 18 points, Darryl Watkins’ 17 points and Brandon Jawato’s 16 points as the Knights came alive in the final quarter.
