Kings star Randle battling concussion

LIVEWIRE Sydney NBL guard Jerome Randle is battling concussion, but star recruit Andrew Bogut’s progression is off the charts according to Kings’ coach Andrew Gaze.

Point guard Randle copped an elbow to the head last weekend and while he attended some of Tuesday’s practice he didn’t train on the court.

“There’s a bit of concussion there and he’s had a few headaches, so he’s not going to do a whole lot this week whether he wants to or not,” Gaze said.

Asked if Randle was in any danger of missing the Kings’ 30th anniversary celebration home game against Cairns next Sunday, Gaze said “I hope not.

“But when you are talking about a head injury, I have no say.

“Whatever they (the doctors) say, if they say he’s going to miss, no arguments from me.”

Randle is fourth in the league in pointscoring and fifth in assists after two rounds. .

Former NBA centre Bogut centre is joint league leader in rebounds and blocks with Melbourne’s Josh Boone.

Heal: Defence is King0:00

NBL: Shane Heal says defence is key if the Sydney Kings are to have success this season.

“He’s improved significantly probably the last three weeks of our pre-season and into the start of the season, his progression has been off the charts,” Gaze said.

“He’s been really good, very engaged, his talk and communication on the defensive end.

“He’s that calming factor out there on the floor to make sure that we’re staying with what we’re supposed to be doing on the offensive end. He’s s been great.” Bogut scored just six points on two of nine shooting in Sydney’s first game but tallied 16 and 13 at 80 and 62 per cent respectively in their last two. “His form the last two games clearly is a lot better than it was in the first game, although he was a beast on the boards in the first game,” Gaze said. “Offensively he’s starting to find his groove.”
