Billy Joe Saunders threatens to pull out of Canelo Alvarez fight over ring size

Billy Joe Saunders and his camp will "fly home" if their ring size demands are not met according to his father.

The undefeated British fighter will take on boxing's pound for pound king Canelo Alvarez on Saturday night.

Canelo will enjoy home advantage with the fight taking place at the AT&T Stadium, home of NFL side Dallas Cowboys.

But issues have surfaced regarding the size of the ring with Saunders' father taking a swipe at Matchroom and promoter Eddie Hearn for "working against at every opportunity".

He iFL TV : "There's a few issues that we've got to sort out that we're not happy about, which have just popped up this morning.

"That is about the size of the ring. Matchroom wants us to box in an 18ft inner ring. Then they've come back with a 20ft ring.

"It was supposed to be a 24ft ring and now we've compromised and said no smaller than a 22ft inner ring.

"MTK is on it and they are all over and hopefully they'll sort it out and im sure it will be, but from Matchroom, to want Billy Joe to box in an 18ft inner ring – that's an amateur ring.

"It seems like to me, and this is the gospel honest truth, that they are trying to take Billy Joe's advantage away from him.

"And we haven't got my advantages here – we're up against everything.

"I don't like to keep running the man (Eddie Hearn) down, he is Billy Joe's promoter, and he's done what he said he could do – he's delivered this fight.

"But at what cost? He's not working with us, he's working against us at every opportunity.

"To face Canelo in an 18ft to 20ft ring is ridiculous. We've left in at 22ft – no lower – otherwise we're flying home."

Despite Saunders' demands, the ABC boxing rules states "the ring shall be no less than 16 or more than 20 feet square when measured inside the line of the ropes".
