Boxing icon Carl Frampton tells YouTubers like Jake Paul to ‘stay in your lane’
Former boxing star Carl Frampton has sent a stark message to Jake Paul and other social media stars who have forayed into boxing. The presence of YouTubers in boxing has grown significantly over the past few years, with 'The Problem Child' being one of the men at the forefront of the revolution.
There was a time where it was hard to believe internet megastars such as Jake’s older brother Logan contesting an exhibition match with arguably the greatest boxer of all time in Floyd Mayweather. During an appearance on the William Hill’s Stripped Podcast, the former two-weight world champion, 35, said that he “doesn’t enjoy” YouTube and influencer boxing matches, suggesting the likes of Paul need to “know their lane”.
“I don’t enjoy watching the YouTube fights. I hated it at the start,” the Irishman said. “I understand what it is they’re doing, but the thing that annoyed me the most is when these YouTube guys start talking about how they want to fight Canelo [Alvarez], for example. Know your limit, fight fellow YouTubers, but know your lane!

“But it does generate a lot of money and it’s bringing a new audience to boxing. At the end of the day boxing is a business – it’s one of the dirtiest businesses in the world. Nobody’s your friend, it’s just a conveyor belt.
"I was really naive – I didn’t realise it was a business at the start and I didn’t understand the ins and outs of it. It took me a bit longer to become wiser but once I did, I was able to see it for what it really is.”
Paul is currently undefeated in his boxing career, having contested six fights with four of those victories coming via knockout. His latest win came at the end of October, beating UFC legend Anderson Silva by unanimous decision in what was his toughest test to date.
For some time, Paul and Love Island alumni Tommy Fury have been trading barbs back and forth and are keen to settle their differences in the boxing ring. After multiple failed attempts, which included Fury pulling out due to injury one time and being unable to enter the United States on another, they have yet to seal a new date.
When asked about a potential fight between YouTuber Paul and Fury, Frampton tipped Paul to defeat Tyson Fury’s younger brother.
“I’ve said before that I think Tommy Fury would lose to Jake Paul, and John [Fury] wasn’t happy when I said that,” he said. "Tommy is a similar level to Jake Paul. Just because Tyson Fury can really fight, it doesn’t mean Tommy is going to be a good fighter. He’s a novice professional – he’s getting better, but I still think Jake Paul would beat him.”
