It was suggested Cantlay was making a stance against the fact he was not being paid for competing in the tournament – something he later denied.
Therefore, LaCava’s decision to wave his cap in the air was aimed at the fans that had been taunting Cantlay all day.
However, LaCava’s actions landed him in hot water as McIlroy – who had reportedly asked the caddie to move out of the way – still had a putt to tie the match.
Shane Lowry and Justin Rose were furious with LaCava and decided to confront the experienced caddie at the back of the 18th green.
Tensions then spilled over onto the car park with McIlroy heard shouting ‘this can’t happen, this can’t happen – it’s a f*****g disgrace’ at the caddie.
As a result, a security guard was forced to step in and calm things down before teammate Lowry guided McIlroy to a waiting BMW 4×4.
However, the pair have reportedly cleared the air, with LaCava reaching out to the European team to apologise for his behaviour on Saturday afternoon.
LaCava is said to have met with McIlroy this morning – with the pair looking to put yesterday’s antics behind them as they head into the final day of the Ryder Cup.
However, US PGA have requested extra security for Cantlay during the final day of the Ryder Cup following the incident yesterday.
It’s not the first time Cantlay has hit the headlines in recent weeks. He refused to attend the gala dinner earlier in the week and, along with his close friend Xander Schauffele.
It is believed by Cantlay and Schauffele had also opposed to allowing Netflix cameras into the team room during the Ryder Cup.
While with both golfers also missed from Team USA’s pre-event scouting mission to Rome in September.
