Free horse racing tips today – Best bets from Cazoo Derby day at Epsom

Genius Jim Bolger can weave his magic again in today’s Cazoo Derby with MAC SWINEY (4.30).

The home-bred son of the trainer’s 2008 Epsom hero New Approach has the silk and steel to repel the Coolmore and Al Maktoum battalions that make up half the 12-runner field.

Mac Swiney is a dual Group One winner and has achieved more than any of his rivals.

He recently showed plenty of guts to win the Irish 2,000 Guineas from stablemate Poetic Flare, winner of the English version.

Bolger believes Mac Swiney will stay and be even better over further and yesterday’s rain only enhances his chance in the great race.

He was almost seven lengths behind today’s favourite Bolshoi Ballet in the Derrinstown Trial but was later found to have an infection.

The favourite is too short but the fact Aidan O Brian runs just one horse suggests they fancy him. Still, 5-4 is no price and the 6-1 about Mac Swiney is better value to these eyes.

Lingfield Derby Trial winner and runner-up, Third Realm (10-1) and Adayer (28-1) are both decent each-way plays.

Tom Marquand knows OH THIS IS US (3.10) almost as well as his fiancee Hollie Doyle.

He has ridden the eight-year-old 21 times and won seven races, most recently at Ascot in April at the princely odds of 66-1.

That proved Oh This Is Us retains plenty of ability and he has previously finished third (2017) and second (2019) in the Cazoo Diomed Stakes.

So his know-how and Marquand’s savvy strength in the saddle is worth a punt at around the 14-1 mark.

Maximal, the sole three-year-old in the race, is highly regarded while Frankie Dettori is an interesting booking for Duke of Hazzard.

Oisin Murphy may not have a ride in the Cazoo Derby but he can gain minor compensation on PATIENT DREAM (2.00) in the opener at Epsom.

Ralph Beckett’s gelding won cosily at the April meeting where he handled the track with aplomb.

He should defy a 7lb rise over the longer trip and is preferred to King Frankel in the World Pool at the Tote Handicap.

Four three-year-olds take on their older generation in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes and STATEMENT(2.35) is fancied to come out on top.

She was an excellent second to Alcohol Free in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury and was not disgraced in the 1,000 Guineas when beaten just six lengths. Posted and Illykato are among the dangers.

The jet-hooved ORNATE (3.45) won the World Pool Dash in 2019 from the worst draw and he runs off exactly the same rating today.

Although he is now an eight year old, he retains plenty of speed and ability and is a sporting punt at 11-1 to burn off his rivals. Stone of Destiny should run well if the gaps open.
