Horse racing tips, best bets for Doomben, Rosehill and Flemington

Our experts give you an early shot at finding a winner in the major races this weekend.

Last week … Two winners. Glenn McFarlane and Nick Quinn were both on the mark with Eduardo ($1.70) in the Doomben 10,000, and Macca’s value bet Realm Of Flowers ($3.20) also saluted in The Andrew Ramsden.

Saturday: ROSEHILL (9 races, start 11.25am), DOOMBEN (9 races, 11.34am), FLEMINGTON (9 races, 11.45am), MURRAY BRIDGE (9 races, 11.56am), BELMONT (9 races, 2.02pm).

NATHAN EXELBY (Sky Racing). Form: 11513

MUGATOO (Race 7, No.2 – $4.80

Concede Zaaki is hard to beat following his brilliant Gold Coast win, but his presence is making Mugatoo look like a very appealing bet here at the current price. Prepared to overlook his Queen Elizabeth run where he was on the quick back up, which most likely didn’t suit, plus he was exposed early in the straight. Gets a lovely smother off the inside this time and can be saved for one crack at them.

Value bet: GOOD SOIZE (Race 9, No.6 – $9)

TRENTON AKERS (Courier Mail). Form: x

CELLARMAID (Race 1, No.4 — $5.50)

Looks a talented mare who is just hitting her straps. Was nominated for the Doomben Cup but connections have had to settle for easier grade here. Put in an eye-catching run at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and she will appreciate the extra trip here.

Value bet: NIEDORP (Race 6, No.10 — $10)

CHRIS VERNUCCIO (NewsRacing) Form: x7287

ZAAKI (Race 7, No. 5 — $2.60)

The import won the Hollindale Stakes with plenty in hand and will be tough to beat again. Despite drawing wide, I’m expecting J-Mac to be positive again.

Value bet: SPRING CHOICE (Flemington, Race 9, No. 5 — $5)

DARREN PRENDERGAST (NewsRacing) Form: 42242

ZAAKI (Doomben Race 7, No.5 — $2.60)

Scored a dominant win in the Hollindale and will be hard to beat again.

Value bet: TOFANE (Race 8, No.2 — $9.50)

MATT JONES (Daily Telegraph) Form: 25425

ELLSBERG (Race 8, No.11 — $2.50)

He was brilliant in winning first-up against Private Eye and had excuses in the Hawkesbury Guineas. He’s ready to bounce back third-up at his home track.

Value bet: WAIRERE FALLS (Race 3, No.4 — $10)

CLINTON PAYNE (Racenet) Form: 54211

GREY LION (Race 7, No.3 – $6.50)

He’s going super the old boy. Comes out of the JRA Plate which is the best form reference for this and he meets Polly Grey 1.5kg better for their clash in that race.

VALUE: SERENA (Race 3, No.3 – $19)

JETT HATTON (Racenet) Form: 54425

TOFANE (Race, 8 No.2 — $9.50)

Her last start run was sneaky good and she historically takes the first-up effort to get going. She’s a Group 1 winner at this trip, this is one of the easiest contests she has faced in a while and if Tofane turns up and blows them away, the odds will look silly.

Value bet: BRANDENBURG (Race 7, No.9 — $19)

GILBERT GARDINER (Herald Sun). Form: 252×4

LA VINA (Race 5, No.10 — $4.20)

Won with authority at Warrnambool last start. The ex-West Australian sprinter has won three of her past four and looks to be hard to beat again.

Value bet: SOMERSET MAUGHAM (Race 9, No.4 — $12)

GLENN McFARLANE (Herald Sun) Form: 81621

HOLBEIN (Race 2, No.2 – $2.25)

Finally broke through for a much deserved win last start and can continue on with it here.

SIMON MOY (NewsRacing) Form: 1403x

HORRIFYING (Race 7, No.4 — $4.00)

Last start’s performance certainly lived up to his name, but with some luck and decent cover can bounce back. Drops 3kg and Jamie Kah sticks.

Value bet: ALL OF BRIGHTON (Race 6, No.7 — $5)

NICK QUINN (TAB). Form: 24481

HEART OF PUISSANCE (Race 4, No.2 — $2.30)

Classy runner who has struck form since stepping up in trip including a Warwick Farm win over 2200 metres before an eye catching second last start in the Warrnambool Cup.

Value bet: SIR DRAGONET (Doomben Race 7, No.1 — $4.60)
