Horse racing tips, best bets for Randwick, Caulfield and Doomben

Our experts give you an early shot at finding a winner in the major races this weekend.

Last week … one winner. Matt Jones got the cash with his value bet Signore Fox ($7) but our experts were lamenting a few placegetters.

Saturday: ROYAL RANDWICK (10 races, start 11.35am), DOOMBEN (9 races, 11.43am), CAULFIELD (9 races, 12.25pm), MORPHETTVILLE (9 races, 12.36pm), ASCOT (9 races, 1.58pm)

RAY THOMAS (Daily Telegraph) Form: 54795

THE IRISHMAN (Race 2, No.4 — $2.80)

The former Kiwi colt, destined for Hong Kong racing, has shown promise in his two Australian starts, winning at the Warwick Farm midweeks against older horses then finishing a close second to top filly Hungry Heart in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes. Hungry Heart franked the form winning the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes last week. The Irishman looks well placed in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes over the Randwick mile and should be very hard to beat.

Value bet: Tudor Music (Race 10, No.12 — $81)

MATT JONES (Daily Telegraph) Form: x14

ANAMOE (Race 6, No. 1 — $2.10)

He was sensational in the Golden Slipper from a wide draw when putting in the run of the race. From a good gate it’s his time to get that Group 1.

Value bet: Rothenburg (Race 3, No.5 — $10.00)

DARREN PRENDERGAST (NewsRacing) Form: 16557

MUGATOO (Race 9, No.1 — $4)

Scored an impressive win in the All-Star Mile to maintain his perfect record over 1600m. Hard to fault.

Value bet: LIBERTINI (Race 8, No.9 — $10)

STEPHEN BRASSEL (National Racing Editor) Form: 4×113

MO’UNGA (Race 9, No.19 — $7.50)

Not worried about the wide gate as they win from out there in the big Randwick miles. With only 49.5kg I can see him getting to the outside and powering over the top of them late.

Value bet: CONCERT HALL (Race 5, No.2 — $16)

CLINTON PAYNE (Racenet) Form: x3

BIVOUAC (Race 8, No.1 — $5)

Comes into this on the fresh side and has drawn to perfection in barrier 2. He’s a horse that takes a few runs and his third-up record is outstanding.

Value bet: CASCADIAN (Race 9, No.10 – $16)

MITCH COHEN (Racenet) Form: x7

TIGER OF MALAY (Race 6, No. 4 — $9.50)

The Freedman brothers have already won the Golden Slipper now this colt can win the Sires’ Produce Stakes. Tiger Of Malay was terrific when finishing a close second to Shaquero in the Pago Pago and should relish the step up to 1400m here.

Value bet: SALTO ANGEL (Race 4, No. 1 — $7.50)

JETT HATTON (Racenet) Form: 15114

BIVOUAC (Randwick Race 8, No.1 — $4.80)

Bivouac generally has one peak performance in a preparation that rates lengths above these and that came third-up last time in when flogging them in the VRC Sprint Classic. He’s the best sprinter in the land and will prove that on Saturday.

Value bet: BRIMHAM ROCKS (Caulfield Race 9, No.2 — $19)

GILBERT GARDINER (Herald Sun). Form: x112

DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR (Race 2, No.1 — $3.40)

He’s the best credentialed sprinter in the race by some margin. If he brings his A-game he wins.

Value bet: YULONG STORM (Race 3, No.3 — $18)

GLENN McFARLANE (Herald Sun) Form: 04173

PLATOON (Caulfield, Race 9, No.5 — $2.30)

Didn’t have a lot of luck when super behind smart horse last start and can win here

Value bet: BIVOUAC (Randwick, Race 8, No.1 — $4.80)

CHRIS VERNUCCIO (NewsRacing) Form: 00113

MOZZIE MONSTER (Race 5, No.6 – $3.50)

Takes on Annavisto again but has a lot more in his favour this time. He stays at 1400m third-up and is drawn to position closer to the favourite. Also, Annavisto won’t get an easy lead again with tough gelding South Parade to contend with.

Value bet: LESSAGE (Race 4, No.3 — $4.80)

Mozzie Monster can go one better than her last start second in the Bendigo Guineas when she heads to Caulfield on Saturday. Photo: Ross Holburt/Racing Photos via Getty ImagesSource:Getty Images

SIMON MOY (NewsRacing) Form: 35×537

MUGATOO (Randwick Race 9, No. 1 — $4.00)

Can measure up again after wonderful All-Star Mile success. Never won on the heavy but soft form suggests won’t be a problem.

Value bet: MOZZIE MONSTER (Caulfield Race 5, No. 6 — $3.40)

NICK QUINN (TAB). Form: 41123

LIQUEURO (Race 6, No.1 — $1.95)

Classy runner who has won three of his four career starts. Comes into this on the back of a strong win at Bendigo where held off Explosive Jack, who I rate as a live chance in the Australian Derby. Looks the winner.

Value bet: MACROURA (Randwick, Race 10, No.2 — $6)

Nathan EXELBY (Sky Racing). Form: x

RACECOURSE ROAD (Race 8, No.2 — $5)

Proved himself in wet conditions with a dominant first up display at the Gold Coast and also showed he was far from one dimensional, being able to take a sit. Drawn ideally here and should be in front of his main danger Jadentom in the run.

Value bet: DEAL OF POWER (Race 7, No.11 — $12)
