O’President rubbed out of Slipper with elevated temperature

Leading trainer Chris Waller’s aspirations of winning a maiden Golden Slipper took a hit with his classy colt O’President set to be scratched from the $3.5 million race on Wednesday.

O’President was found to have an elevated temperature during a routine check up on Wednesday morning and the stable will withdraw the son of Fastnet Rock from Saturday’s Rosehill showpiece.

“We monitored him for two hours and there were no changes so have therefore treated him with anti-inflammatories and unfortunately he will be withdrawn from the Golden Slipper,” Waller confirmed in a statement.

“The horse remarkably still ate all of his feed and seems very bright and happy but you can’t hide temperatures and no risks will be taken.”

O’President had secured his spot in the Golden Slipper with a determined all the way victory in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes last month.

The talented colt was rated the best chance among Waller’s three Slipper runners to win the race with bookies and was an $11 hope with TAB.com.au.

Waller still has Magic Millions winner Shaquero ($26) and Group 2 Silver Slipper victor Home Affairs ($16) in the race – one of the few major Australian Group 1 races the trainer hasn’t captured.

O’President is likely to be spelled as the stable looks towards a three-year-old campaign which is likely to include the Group 1 races like Golden Rose, Caulfield Guineas and Coolmore Stud Stakes in the spring.

“It is unlikely he will race again at two but I will send him out to the farm today for a few days and monitor him before making that decision and it is most likely that he will be prepared properly for his three-year-old season, ready to take on the premier three-year-old stallion making races,” the stable said.

“It is disappointing for my owners and my staff but fortunately we have a talented Group Two winning colt with a bright future ahead.”

The scratching of O’President will also leave two-time Slipper winning jockey Glen Boss without a ride in the 1200m feature.
