SuperCoach Racing 2020: Five top contenders for the Epsom Handicap

Four-year-old mares Funstar and Probabeel will resume their rivalry in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap this Saturday.

The pair have clashed six times with the scoreline 3-3 — Funstar winning three of their first four encounters.

The last mare to win the Epsom was Winx in 2015.

Chris Waller has an astounding eight runners in the capacity 20-horse field, including last year’s winner Kolding, Funstar and Star Of The Seas as he chases his fifth Epsom Handicap triumph.

Star Of The Seas is the new favourite for the 1600m handicap at Randwick following the barrier draw.

Here are five of the top chances for the Epsom:

He’s due a big win after two agonisingly close seconds in the Group 1 Winx Stakes and George Main Stakes. The six-year-old gelding, who was also runner-up in the Doncaster in the autumn, is in career-best form. Ran third in this race last year.

SuperCoach price: $375,000

The New Zealand mare has had an incredible year with four wins and three seconds from eight starts. Her biggest triumph was the Group 1 Surround Stakes in February where she nosed out Funstar, and the only blemish was when she didn’t run out the 2400m Oaks trip. She can unleash a powerful finish.

SuperCoach price: $350,000

An Epsom victory will restore her reputation as she hasn’t quite reached the heights promised following her three-year-old season, which netted the Group 1 Flight Stakes. As a four-year-old mare, she has started favourite in five of her six starts but has only won one of those races – the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes over Probabeel.

SuperCoach price: $300,000

Ran fifth in last year’s Epsom after winning the Cameron Handicap. He again won the Newcastle Group 3 feature but in a more dominant manner. A good track is the key for him.

Won the Epsom last spring before going on to capture the inaugural Golden Eagle. The five-year-old gelding has surged back into form winning the Group 1 George Main Stakes last start after a lacklustre autumn campaign in Melbourne.
