Randwick trainer John Thompson is aiming for the ultimate 47th birthday present – his second million dollar race success in seven days at Kembla on Saturday.
Thompson celebrated his birthday last Sunday following Sweet Deal’s win in the $1 million The Hunter at Newcastle on Saturday.
This week it’s the turn of Purple Sector in the $1 million The Gong (1600m) at Kembla.
Purple Sector is part-owned by Joseph Hayek, whose son Harry is a UK based race car driver who is part of the McLaren development driving team.

Harry Hayek was set to contest the British GT season as part of a two-car team filled by McLaren development drivers but due to COVID the program has been delayed until the 2021 season.
“That’s how the horse got his name,” Thompson said. “He’s finally starting to live up to his name.
“The timing screens in Formula 1 use a colour-coding system.
“The three colours are yellow, green and purple.
“Yellow means slower sector and or lap, Green is a driver’s personal best for that sector and or lap, Purple is the session best sector and or lap time.
“Everybody in car racing wants the purple sector.
“They tell me the horse has a real following among the drivers.”
Purple Sector promised a bit as a late three-year-old when taking out the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate back in 2019 but it’s taken another 18 months for the five-year-old son of Pins to start to deliver on the promise he’s shown his trainer since his three-year-old days.

“He’s always shown me good potential,” Thompson said. “I’ve always thought he was a Group Two or Three horse but maybe he might be a Group One horse.
“The win at Randwick was bloody good. The time he ran, the way he did it and then he went to Flemington and got lost but he was good enough to get himself out of trouble and win.
“The time of that was fast as well.
“The way he won at Randwick makes me think Group One races won’t be out of reach in the future.”
Purple Sector is shooting for three straight on Saturday and has drawn favourably in barrier five for assignment.
If Purple Sector is capable of winning on Saturday, Thompson will become the first trainer to win both The Hunter and The Gong.

“He was held back from the early part of the spring looking at the Railway Stakes but due to COVID it was a bit tricky to get him there so we decided to target The Gong,” Thompson said.
“He’s going super. The conditions should be favourable and the only time he went to Kembla he won easily.
“Everything is pointing to another solid effort.”
Rachel King, who rode Purple Sector when the horse won at Randwick two starts back, returns to the saddle on Saturday.
