Derrick Lewis suffered a unanimous decision defeat against Jailton Almeida in UFC Sao Paulo’s main event on Saturday night.
The 38-year-old was searching for a successive win in the UFC heavyweight division, having secured a TKO victory over Marcos Rogério de Lima in his last bout.
However, things did not go to plan for the American, who was dealt a fourth defeat in his last five UFC bouts after a dominant grappling display from Almeida.
The Brazilian controlled most of the fight on the ground, with his 21:10 control time setting a new single-fight UFC heavyweight record.
Lewis had no answer to his counterparts grappling and wrestling skills, leading the judges to score the bout unanimously in Almeida’s favour, 50-44 50-44 50-45.

32-year-old Almeida is now undefeated in his six UFC outings following the victory
After the fight, Almeida issued a call-out to one of the UFC’s biggest names in a bid to make a mouth-watering match-up next year.
‘I’m going to call out a name here. I want Ciryl Gane. I’ll fight in Paris, whenever’, Almeida said according to CombatSportsUK.
Almeida, 32, boasts a professional MMA record of 22-2 and is undefeated in his six UFC outings thus far.
The disappointing result comes days after Lewis was arrested for reportedly driving 136mph in a 50mph zone just days before headlining the event in Sau Paulo.
The 38-year-old was stopped while driving a red Lamborghini in his hometown of Houston, according to multiple reports.
Lewis allegedly passed several officers while weaving through traffic and making dangerous lane changes, according to police.
He has been charged with reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and was given was given a $100 personal recognizance bond before being released.
Lewis is due back in court on December 27 in Harris County, Texas.
