GSP backs McGregor to defeat Poirier by second-round KO at UFC 264

Georges St-Pierre backs Conor McGregor to avenge Fight Island loss to Dustin Poirier with a second-round KO at UFC 264 trilogy bout as the Irishman is ‘very good in rematches’

  • Georges St-Pierre has backed Conor McGregor to beat Dustin Poirier at UFC 264
  • The lightweight rivals meet for a third time with the pair split at a win apiece
  • Poirier, 32, inflicted McGregor’s first knockout defeat on Fight Island this year
  • However, GSP claims the Irishman will win and is ‘very good in rematches’

Georges St-Pierre has backed Conor McGregor to avenge his Fight Island defeat by Dustin Poirier and clinch a knockout victory at UFC 264, with the UFC legend insisting the Irishman is ‘very good in rematches’.

McGregor, 32, suffered his first ever professional defeat by knockout in January, when Poirier, also 32, executed a masterful kickboxing display to finish the Notorious in the second round at UFC 257.

Poirier has accepted a third fight against McGregor, having lost to the former two-weight world champion in 2014, and the stakes are high for the Irishman who is moving further away from a shot at his old lightweight title.

The Irishman suffered his first knockout defeat at UFC 257 after a masterclass from Poirier

However, UFC legend GSP believes that McGregor has what it takes to defeat The Diamond in Las Vegas on July 10, predicting a second round knockout for the Notorious.

‘I think McGregor is very good in rematches, and I think he’s going to have the victory,’ St-Pierre told Tristar Gym YouTube channel via MMA Junkie. ‘I think he’s probably going to win in the second round. A knockout.’

The Quebecer refers to McGregor’s rematch win over Nate Diaz in 2016, months after the Stockton-born fighter secured a shock submission victory over the in-form Irishman.

And UFC legend GSP has predicted a second-round knockout victory for McGregor this time

Fans and pundits are torn over the outcome of McGregor and Poirier’s trilogy matchup, and GSP’s coach, Firas Zahabi, believe it is a 50-50 fight heading into UFC 264.

‘My official pick was 50-50 odds. I think it could go either way, but because GSP picked McGregor, I’ve got to pick Poirier,’ Zahabi said after GSP gave his prediction.

‘I’m gonna make a case for Poirier right now. At 155, McGregor’s power is maybe not exactly what it used to be, and he’s got to do five rounds.

‘I think Poirier showed in fight No. 2 (that) he’s smart enough to take McGregor in the later rounds. In Round 1, he took a big left, and he took it well.

GSP says McGregor is ‘very good in rematches’ as was shown against Nate Diaz in 2016

Khabib Nurmagomedov says McGregor must win in the first round or will suffer defeat again

‘I think psychologically Poirier’s a bit more ready to take that left hand. He’s more aware about it. I think this is an incredibly difficult fight,’ Zahabi added.

GSP’s prediction comes after McGregor’s arch rival Khabib Nurmagomedov claimed that the Irishman must wrap up the fight within one round, or else the lightweight star will suffer the same outcome as UFC 257.

‘If it’s the first round (for a finish), I’d back Conor,’ Nurmagomedov told RT. ‘From the second round and further, then Dustin wins.’
