Khabib Nurmagomedov confirms his dad is fighting for his life due to coronavirus

Khabib Nurmagomedov has revealed his dad is in critical condition after contracting Covid-19.

The UFC lightweight provided an update on social media following reports that Abdulmanap had been placed in an induced coma.

Nurmagomedov also revealed almost two dozen of his family members had been ill from coronavirus.

"In my personal case, I've had more than 20 people sick from my family," he said.

"More than 20 people were lying in the ICUs. And many of them are no longer among us. Many acquaintances have died, many parents of my relatives. Everybody is having a hard time dealing with it.

"There is a lot written on the internet about my father. My father, right now, is located in a hospital. He is in critical condition as a result of this virus.

"It impacted his heart because last year he had a surgery there, and right now, they did another surgery. He is in a very difficult situation, very difficult. We are asking Allah that he returns him to us.

"Our learned Islamic scholars are telling us, 'Stay home, and do the holiday prayer. Don't have guests. Don't go yourselves as guests.' It is a very difficult situation."

Nurmagomedov had previously said he would be ready to return to the UFC in September to defend his 155lb belt.

His next fight will be against Justin Gaethje following the American's stunning fifth-round victory over Tony Ferguson earlier this month.

Should Nurmagomedov declare himself able to return, his fight with Gaethje would likely take place on Fight Island.

Meanwhile, UFC president Dana White has sent his support to his lightweight champion.

"Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is a true martial artist who lives a life of pride, honour and respect," he said.

"He instilled those same values in his son, world champion Khabib, at an early age and was always in his corner throughout his career.

"I know how close Khabib is with his father and I’m saddened to hear about his current state. My thoughts are with Abdulmanap and the Nurmagomedov family as he continues to fight."
