Third in the AFC East and with a losing record, it’s not looking quite so rosy for Bill Belichick and his New England Patriots.
Tom Brady left the Pats for Tampa Bay during the off-season and now New England have suffered their worst start to a NFL season since 2002.
Behind the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, it would be easy to blame the struggles on suiting up with a new QB in Cam Newton. But Belechick will know it goes deeper than that.
The Patriots O-line have been majorly hit with injuries this season. They saw Marcus Cannon opt-out of the season; David Andrews landed on injured reserve after breaking his thumb while Shaq Mason and James Ferentz recently landed on the Covid-19 list.
Newton also missed a game having tested positive for the virus, and he struggled on his return against the Broncos in Week 6.
The previous two losses came against Super Bowl contenders in Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks.
The Pats defence limited the Broncos to field goals but still the offence could not pull them through.
The loss of Brady to lead the line is obviously huge but expectations were that Cam would at least lead the Pats into the playoffs.
Chicago Bears fans believe Mitch Trubisky’s career is over despite beating Falcons
Now that is a major doubt with Belichick being forced to coach around some major deficiencies.
The Pats are never going to be easy opposition with Belichick always having his team fight to the end, but the struggles run deep.
The wide receivers found it tough to separate against the Broncos and it’s hard to put all the blame on Newton when that’s the case.

At a certain point, talent simply becomes an issue for the Patriots and Belichick, and it is beginning to look like the ability is simply not there this year.
Linemen are being played out of position and rookies are having to be trusted – it’s less than ideal.
Don’t bet against Belichick turning this around but it’s certainly not going to be an easy task.
