Tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has been crowned the winner of the 2021 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
It caps a phenomenal breakthrough year for the tennis sensation, who followed up a run at Wimbledon with victory at the US Open.
With the victory, she became the first British woman to win a grand slam tennis event since Virginia Wade's win at the All England Club in 1977.
She also became the first qualifier to ever win a major event – and didn't drop a set at any point.
Raducanu is the first female recipient of the SPOTY gong since Zara Phillips in 2006 and given her age of just 19, stands in a great position to become the first woman to win the award twice.
She was the overwhelming favourite to win the award and beat off competition from Tyson Fury, who has twice beaten Deontay Wilder in world heavyweight boxing title matches, Olympians Adam Peaty, Sarah Storey and Tom Daley. Raheem Sterling was also on the six-person shortlist.
Controversially, Sir Lewis Hamilton was not included on the shortlist after missing out on an eighth F1 world title for Max Verstappen earlier this month.
Raducanu was not present at Salford's Media City for the awards ceremony as she was training in the United Arab Emirates ahead of preparing for the Australian Open and other events in early 2022.
Will Emma Raducanu challenge Serena Williams to become the greatest female tennis player of all-time? Let us know in the comments section.
However, she has since been forced into isolation in Abu Dhabi after testing positive for Covid-19 during her involvement in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.
Speaking before SPOTY, fellow tennis star Andy Murray, a three-time winner of the award, says that Raducanu deserved to come out on top.
"Every time I won it I got accused of not having a personality but she has a fantastic personality," Murray joked.
"She deserves to win, I don’t think anyone would be too surprised if that is the outcome."
