Iman Shumpert: Former champion becomes first NBA player to win Dancing With the Stars
2016 NBA champion Iman Shumpert adds another trophy to his cabinet after winning Dancing with the Stars.
In 30 seasons of the show, Shumpert becomes the first basketball player to take out the crown or even reach the finale, winning alongside pro partner Daniella Karagach.
Shumpert and Karagach beat out fellow finalists JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson (2nd), Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke (3rd) and Amanda Kloots and Alan Bersten (4th) to take home the Mirrorball Trophy.
Shumpert and Karagach received a perfect score of 40 out of 40 for their foxtrot fusion dance to “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire and followed it up with another perfect score with their freestyle to “Lose Control” by Missy Elliott featuring Ciara and Fat Man Scoop and “Bounce” by DJ Client.
“I had a coach that didn’t let us dunk, told us, ‘Don’t dunk the basketball on my team,'” Shumpert told Karagach. “You’re the coach that says, ‘Don’t just dunk it. 360 it.’ … Everybody wants to play for that coach.”
Shumpert’s performances attracted plenty of support from his former NBA teammates during his stint on the show, with many taking to Twitter to congratulate him.
