LIV Golf branded ‘profit-making circus’ after damaging Australian course
A LIV Golf tournament, which saw beer cans hurled onto a green, has been branded a 'profit-making circus'.
The controversial Saudi-backed tour held what has been widely regarded as its most successful tournament so far at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide.
An event featuring many of the world’s best players and thousands of fans was always going to lead to some superficial damage, but this tournament saw some particularly rowdy galleries. At one stage, hundreds of beer cans and cups were thrown onto the course when Chase Koepka hit a hole-in-one at a hole nicknamed ‘The Watering Hole’.

There was also a large concert by the renowned DJ Fisher as organisers aimed to make the event a party, not just a golf tournament.
But some long-time members of the exclusive club have blasted LIV’s presence and the state the course has been left in. Trevor Craig, a member of 45 years, told Adelaide outlet The Advertiser: “A profit-making circus has come to town and the people paying the price are the members. We’re not a charity, we’re a private club, and I don’t think we’ve been compensated adequately.”

According to The Advertiser, damage caused to the course from the three-day event will take six months to repair.
However, Craig’s comments were not shared by everyone. Members of the club who took part in a survey reportedly revealed that 86% were “satisfied or very satisfied” with the tournament. In contrast, just 7% were “dissatisfied or very dissatisfied” with the event.
The tournament was won by home hero Cam Smith, who reckoned the victory even eclipsed his triumph at last year’s Open Championship.
He said: "I would go as far as to say this is the best event I’ve ever played. I think I’m probably biased a little bit being from Australia, but this is what LIV Golf is about."
