London Marathon 2024 ballot and entry rules explained
Sir Mo Farah set for final marathon in London
This year’s London Marathon will take place later today and is poised to see thousands of elite athletes, celebrities and club runners alike taking to the famous course on the streets of England’s capital city. The event, which will also see Mo Farah competing in his final race over the 26.2-mile distance, will be shown live on the BBC throughout the day and is set to be attended in person by scores of friends, family members and relatives of those competing.
The route has remained largely unchanged since the inaugural event in 1981 and will take runners around several of London’s most famous landmarks, with the finish line set to be stationed in its usual position outside Buckingham Palace. Over 350,000 entries are submitted each year but only 17,000 lucky applicants are selected to take part in the iconic race, which means that just one in every 26 hopefuls are given the opportunity to compete.
Although it is by no means an easy feat to make it to the start line, it never fails to stop the London Marathon from being considered as one of the most popular events on the British sporting calendar. Thousands more will undoubtedly be trying their luck in applying for next year’s edition of the race over the coming weeks, with the vast majority of applicants set to be disappointed in their efforts to secure their spot in 2024.

When does the London Marathon ballot open for 2024?
You can already submit your application for next year’s race, with the ballot having opened yesterday (Saturday, April 22). Applying for the ballot is free of charge but you will need to pay the full entry fee of £69.99 if you are successful in order to rubber-stamp your position on the start line.
Applications can be submitted via the London Marathon website, where you can also try your luck by applying through a charity spot. The ballot is set to close in only a few days’ time at 9pm on Friday, April 28, though, which means that time is already running out to get involved in the 2024 edition of Britain’s most popular marathon event.
There is also an option to donate to the London Marathon Foundation when entering the ballot, which ensures that you will automatically be placed into a second draw to double your chances of making the cut. Your entry fee will also be reduced from £69.99 to £49.99 if you are successful in either draw.

When is the London Marathon 2024?
Next year’s London Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, April 21. Successful applicants are expected to be informed that they have been awarded a spot in the race by the end of October later this year.
Fans of the famous event will be delighted to have seen it make a welcome return to its traditional April slot, with the last three editions having been held in October as a result of the coronavirus pandemic that first wreaked havoc with the sporting calendar back in 2020.
