Tennis star says ‘don’t tell me to shut up’ as players square off in tense scene

There wasn't much love lost between tennis stars Jaume Munar and Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Madrid Open.

The lowly-ranked pair faced off in the first round in the Spanish capital, with Munar prevailing 7-6, 7-6 in straight sets. Tensions flared early on when Kokkinakis expressed frustration with Munar's dialogue with his coach's box during the first set tiebreaker.

Kokkinakis didn't like that very much and hit back: "Bro, you don't shut up." Following the end of the match, which Munar celebrated like he'd won Wimbledon, the pair exchanged more words in a heated confrontation at the net.

Munar pointed his finger in the direction of Kokkinakis and referenced his previous comments, saying: "Don’t tell me to shut up again."

Kokkinakis then hit back: "Or what," adding, "Don't talk to me then." The umpire attempted to intervene but to no avail as the warring pair discussed what had happened during their game.

Munar continued pointing his finger in the direction of Kokkinakis, who ended the argument after around a minute by walking off. It didn't matter to a delighted Munar, who celebrated his victory once more with an emphatic run and jump out on court.

Their spat attracted plenty of interest on social media, including from one user who said: "Kokki would have this guy for breakfast in a throw down…"

Someone else added: "Kokki came off more like a street fighter than a classy tennis player." As a third person commented: "Munar is a baby." Another fan gave their perspective on a potential fight between the pair, saying: "My guy @TKokkinakis would wash this dude if they threw hands."

Munar, who is ranked no.88 in the world, will now face Tallon Griekspoor in the next round. The pair are in the same quarter of the draw as no.3 seed Casper Ruud, who faces qualifier Matteo Arnaldi next.
