Arkansas football recruit Catrell Wallace arrested for alleged sexual assault of 12-year-old
Arkansas Razorbacks football recruit Catrell Wallace has been arrested on second-degree sexual assault and tampering charges, according to the Benton (Arkansas) Police Department.
Wallace, 18, turned himself in to police Monday at the Saline County jail. According to the police, an alleged sexual encounter between Wallace and a 12-year-old occurred during the early morning hours of Jan. 1.
"Although it appears to have been a consensual encounter, BNPD detectives were able to determine that Wallace had reason to believe the victim was underage at the time of the crime," police said in a statement. "It was also noted that Wallace instructed witnesses to lie about the crime in an effort to conceal it."
Wallace was 18 years old at the time of the alleged incident. The investigation is still open, per the authorities.
Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said the team was aware of the charges.
“We are gathering information and (are) in contact with the proper authorities regarding the situation,” Pittman said. “Once we have additional information, we will make a determination on his status with our program."
A defensive end, Wallace helped Bryant High School win the Arkansas Class 7A state championship during his senior season and signed with the Razorbacks in December.
