Christian Horner has called an emergency meeting with Red Bull mechanics just an hour ahead of qualifying for the United States Grand Prix. Sky Sports F1 host Simon Lazenby said Horner had a “face like thunder” as he walked into the Red Bull base.

Martin Brundle explained: “It looks incredibly serious. It seems to me a lot of the team came out of the hospitality area. They all went into the garage, including Max Verstapen and Adrian Newey, every team member.

“They then came out en masse and have gone back into the hospitality area. People that would normally talk to us, give us a heads up, don’t want to talk to us.”

Moments later, Brundle added that a Red Bull source had suggested that the issue was not about the team’s budget cap breach. Just 15 minutes later, Sky Sports F1 confirmed the meeting was called to tell the team about the death of Red Bull chief Dietrich Mateschitz.
