Daniel Ricciardo has sent a message to Australian protege Oscar Piastri who will take his McLaren seat next season. Ricciardo told the hotly-rated rookie to take things “race by race” and to just enjoy driving the car.
He also fired a warning to the F2 champion not to set unrealistic expectations in his first season. He told F1’s Beyond the Grid podcast: “I think just go out and drive. I know that sounds like a really lazy response but it’s just go out and drive. Yeah learn, be a sponge but drive.
“Don’t set the bar too high for yourself. If you end up doing better than maybe what you thought, awesome. But just take it race by race. As long as you’re learning and you feel you’re improving race by race I think that’s all you can kind of ask for yourself.”
Ricciardo was dropped by McLaren over the summer after a difficult run of form.
The 33-year-old secured just eight points finishes all season and trailed team-mate Lando Norris by 85 points. McLaren instead opted to sign the services of former Alpine test driver Piastri.
McLaren were even forced into a struggle with F1’s Contract Recognition Board after Piastri snubbed the French manufacturer’s promotion. However, Ricciardo claims his work with McLaren could still be put to use by Piastri next season.
He added: “I think also even if we didn’t quite get it right from my side with McLaren they still would have learned a bunch from our two years. Things where we deviated or went a little wrong or sideways.

“I think all that knowledge can be passed onto Oscar and I’d like to think they would kind of have a little bit of a headstart from that point of view.” Ricciardo has signed a deal with Red Bull to become their third driver for next season to allow him time away from the racetrack.
The former race winner still has his eyes set on a return to the grid for 2024 but has denied his current contract confirms a future race seat. He explained: “It’s not… in terms of it’s not there, written. It’s not like, ‘Okay, if you’re doing really well on the sim, we’re going to promote you to a race seat’.
“But I think with time I will find my true answer, if the grid is what I want again in 2024.”
