Max Verstappen had a turbulent morning ahead of Dutch Grand Prix qualifying after he was summoned to the stewards upon his arrival at Circuit Zandvoort. The Red Bull star was questioned on overtaking Lance Stroll under a red flag during Friday’s second practice session.

Verstappen pleaded his defence that his manoeuvre was already underway and backing out would have caused an accident.

The FIA saw sense and opted against punishing the 23-year-old with a grid penalty.

Verstappen returned to his car and went about his business in epic fashion, setting by far the quickest lap in FP3.

Lewis Hamilton was half a second behind with Valtteri Bottas a further two tenths off the leader.

“Max is in unbelievable form,” Sky Sport pundit Nico Rosberg said. “That lap was just spectacular. He has so much confidence, he is flying out there.

“If everything goes normal, it’s going to be difficult to catch him in qualifying today.”
