F1 fans demand ‘boring’ Miami GP gets axed forever after Max Verstappen win

F1 preview: A lap of the Miami Grand Prix

Formula One should ditch the Miami Grand Prix because the circuit is ‘boring’, according to F1 fans on social media. World Champion Max Verstappen had started Sunday’s race in ninth position on the grid, but after calmly carving his way through the field on a savvy hard tyres strategy, he eventually overtook teammate Sergio Perez to extend his lead at the top of the drivers’ championship to 14 points after five races.

The Red Bull pair have dominated the season so far, with Verstappen winning three of the opening Grands Prix and Mexican Perez claiming the other two.

But if the race-winner proved to be all too predictable, despite his modest grid position, fans of the sport were even less impressed with the Miami circuit itself and did not hold back when it came to letting their feelings be known.

The 57-lap event, which is held on the Miami International Autodrome, was only added to the F1 calendar last season, but already there are calls by enthusiasts on Twitter to have it removed for good.

@pathikgamana97 said: “This is an incredibly boring race. Wish they never added Miami to the calendar.” @SuzieKaay agreed, Tweeting: “F1 should remove Miami from its calendar, this track sucks.”

@TheNeilesh wrote: “Miami is right up there with the most boring race tracks ever created,” while @BrendonArendse1 Tweeted: Baku : I’m gonna be the most boring race of the 2023 F1 season. Miami: Hold my beer.” @SandersonJacob said: “Miami is easily the worst GP on the calendar, everything about it is horrible.” @Pottsy147 agreed, saying: Miami GP, worst race on the calendar, not even close.”

The presence of YouTube influencers did little to endear the F1 purists to the Miami event. @alexcasas404 Twetted: Petition to remove the F1 race from Miami. I just watched an “influencer” call Alfa Romeo, “Alfa Romero” when she was literally invited by the team to do a hot lap.”

Former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was not impressed with the elaborate sequence of events which preceded the main race. He Tweeted: “This Miami intro. Can such a thing never happen again ever.” @Consumer_HeroSA concurred, writing: 100% agree!! Movie promos, rappers doing a driver intro, Williams sisters, just remove Miami from the schedule completely.”

@gregorybaser did not call for Miami’s outright removal but made some suggestions for improving it. He Tweeted: “How to improve the Miami Grand Prix. Get rid of the over the top grid announcer and the crying worthy medal ceremony. Racing please, not show business.”

Although calls to ditch the South Florida event were plentiful on social media, disgruntled fans could be out of luck in their push for change. Race organisers signed a 10-year deal with Formula One in 2021, so the likelihood is that it will be a fixture on the F1 calendar for years to come.
