Lewis Hamilton will be aiming to start his reign as a seven-time world champion in typical dominating fashion as he attempts to land pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Brit, who secured the title last time out in Turkey, dominated Friday’s running in Sakhir which saw him largely around half-a-second faster than his rivals, and he will be favourite to land a 10th pole in qualifying

Not much action at all so far, Russell doesn’t even set a fast lap as he pits on his first full run of the circuit. It’s up to Max Verstappen to set the early benchmark as his car sparks spectacurly from underneath as he crosses the line to start his lap.

The sun has set, the floodlights are on and George Russell is quickly out of the garage to get qualifying underway for Williams.

And it’s a red light. After some steering wheel issues in practice, Hamilton went for a final run to test a fix for the problem in the final session, only for the pit-lane to close about two seconds before he reached the track.

This must be the F1 equivalent of seeing your train depart the moment you step on the platform.

Back to Hamilton though and the only other thing to have beaten him this weekend is Max Verstappen’s Red Bull, with the Dutchman fastest in final practice.

Not on Friday’s evidence. The newly crowned seven-time world champion looks to be on the front foot rather than sitting back in Bahrain, and he will hope for a tenth pole position of the season this afternoon. Hello all and welcome to our live coverage of qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
