Ferrari chief launches Mick Schumacher charm offensive amid debut F1 campaign

The name Schumacher is synonymous with past success at Ferrari – but maybe the story isn't done yet.

It was with the Italian team that F1 legend Michael Schumacher won five of his seven world titles, and now his son Mick is being touted as a possible driver for the Scuderia in the future.

The 22-year-old has been signed onto the Ferrari Academy since 2019, and is currently driving at Haas, alongside Russian Nikita Mazepin, in his debut F1 season.

He's yet to pick up a championship point but that hasn't stopped Ferrari sports director Laurent Mekies from speaking glowingly about the youngster – whilst strongly hinting he could yet follow in his father's footsteps.

"In his debut F1 campaign, Mick is confirming the speed and values that made him stand out in all his previous youth career," he told Marca .

"Speed, determination, effort and desire to learn. These are some of the characteristics that he had revealed within our Academy and that he has also begun to demonstrate with Haas.

"We are very confident that his growth it will continue and will be even stronger in a team with which it shares ambitions."

Schumacher senior was at Ferrari from 1996 to 2006, and then spent a further three years helping the team in an advisory role.

His son, along with daughter Gina-Marie and wife Corinna, all feature in a newly-released Netflix documentary about his famous career, and on how the family have coped since the German icon's skiing accident in December 2013.

Schumacher, 52, spent six months in a medically induced coma and prior to the film, his family had opted to keep news of his condition and rehabilitation private.

Mick however, told he was pleased with how the documentary had portrayed his father: “It’s great. I’m very happy and relieved that people really accepted the way we were intending it to," he said.

“And for people to see the sacrifices he had to take to be able to achieve what he did, and that people now realise it hasn’t been given to him and he had to work for it.

“I think that’s very good and basically what the documentary is about – to show what a hard worker he is and what a fighter he is, and I’m very proud we were able to transmit that with this message.”
