George Russell throws ‘spanner in the works’ of Lewis Hamilton Mercedes talks

George Russell could end up joining Mercedes at the request of Lewis Hamilton.

The seven-time Formula One world champion is yet to agree an extension with the manufacturer, making him a free agent ahead of the 2021 season opener on March 28.

While it has been reported that wages are a stumbling block for the two parties, Mercedes have firmly stated that they will not be making any comment on rumours.

However, a report has now emerged that states how Hamilton is keen to play a role in choosing who he might drive with beyond 2021, if he should continue.

Autosprint report that the performance of Russell in Bahrain might have ‘thrown a spanner in the works’ on the topic of the future of Hamilton.

Italian journalist Alessandro Gargantini has said: "It would not surprise us if Hamilton wants to play an active role in the choice of the second driver after 2021.

"Russell, unlike Valtteri Bottas, showed in the junior classes that he can win impressively easily and frequently.

“His performance will not have gone unnoticed by those at the top at Mercedes.”

He then added that should Hamilton only agree a one-year deal, Russell could race for Mercedes alongside Max Verstappen for the 2022 championship.

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has said of Hamilton’s future: ”We have had such a successful run of championships for the past seven years, there is no reason why not to continue.

"He is on the top of his game and he will be for a while, so that is why continuing together is a no-brainer.

"We always prioritised the championship and not being distracted by sometimes difficult discussions, as is the nature of negotiation, and then Covid struck with Lewis so it has delayed us a bit, but we are not worried in eventually getting it done."
