George Russell says he's learning in Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher never had team-mates that could take the fight to them, according to former F1 driver Jarno Trulli. The Italian claims that their dominant cars have also played a big role in the pair each winning seven world championships.
Trulli believes that was underlined by how well George Russell did when he stepped into the Mercedes for the Sakhir Grand Prix.
The 22-year-old looked like he was going to win on his debut on two occasions but for a disastrous pit stop which left him down the field.
Russell still finished ninth and recorded the fastest lap though proving just how fast the Mercedes car is.
Trulli thinks Hamilton and Schumacher have never been properly tested by team-mates.
He said: “Lewis Hamilton has never had a teammate as strong as him, or almost as strong.
“I think a real fan understands this. The same goes for Michael Schumacher.
“Besides, without a great car Michael wouldn’t have won so much either.
“He and Lewis have almost always won in great cars.”
Trulli believes many drivers could win the title for Mercedes as Russell’s pace in the Silver Arrows proved.
He added: “Russell showed overwhelmingly the superiority of that car.
“Without experience he was already winning big at the first attempt.
“I don’t want to be misunderstood, Hamilton is the best on the grid, but it is fair to acknowledge that other drivers would have won many titles with that rocket.”
Trulli wants a more competitive Formula One but thinks it is unlikely that will be the case in 2021.
He explained: “I would like it to be more about for the drivers in 2021, but after seeing Russell in the Mercedes I doubt that.”
F1 is now on the winter break and returns with pre-season testing in March.
The Australian Grand Prix kicks off the new season on Sunday, March 21 with 23 races scheduled for the 2021 campaign.
Hamilton will look to win his eighth F1 world championship and beat Schumacher’s record to underline his position as the best driver to have ever raced.
Valtteri Bottas is set to stay at Mercedes alongside the Brit.
