Jeremy Clarkson owes Alpine F1 beers after Esteban Ocon gets podium at Monaco GP

F1 preview: A lap of the Monaco Grand Prix

Jeremy Clarkson has promised to buy Alpine’s F1 staff “many” beers after Esteban Ocon picked up a surprise podium at the Monaco Grand Prix. The former Top Gear host said he would buy the team drinks if they held on for a top-three finish.

Ocon duly delivered, benefitting from a series of errors from other drivers to take P3. Clarkson posted on Twitter: “Come on @AlpineF1Team I’ll buy you all a pint if you get a podium here.”

The post received over 6,500 likes with some questioning whether he would stick to his statement. However, minutes after the chequered flag, Clarkson seemed to suggest he was being serious.

He added: “Well done @AlpineF1Team I owe you many Hawkstones.” Alpine’s staff were quick to comment underneath the message after spotting it after the race.

Chris Shawe posted on Twitter: “Will be in the office Tuesday waiting for the delivery!” Brett Foster, a wind tunnel engineer at Alpine added: “Looking forward to it!”

Ocon held up the rest of the field as he valiantly held on to third in the opening stages. He eventually dropped behind the Mercedes of George Russell but moved back up the field as rain caused chaos.

Russell ran wide at Mirabeau and made contact with the Red Bull of Sergio Perez when he rejoined the track. This allowed Ocon to slip back through to P3 where he managed to hold off a fast-charging Lewis Hamilton to secure a podium.

The result is Alpine’s first top-three finish since Fernando Alonso secured third at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix. It’s Ocon’s first appearance on the podium since the Frenchman won the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

After the race, Ocon said: “I’m speechless, I’m on a cloud at the moment – I don’t know what to say! Before the weekend, if you told us that we were going to be in the top 10, we would have been happy, you know?

“But it’s not the top 10, it’s not the top 5, it’s a podium! We are on it, and the energy I’ve received from everyone from [this] weekend has been awesome. I can’t thank everyone enough for the support I got, and that one goes to all the team, from Viry to Enstone to the track. This one’s for us and hopefully there’s many more to come.”
