Lewis Hamilton's Belgian Grand Prix was ended on the first lap following a collision with former McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso.
After both drivers got the jump on Sergio Perez, Hamilton attempted to take second place from Alonso by going around the outside, only to clip the front wheel of the Alpine which sent the Mercedes flying into the air briefly. Hamilton had to retire later in the lap with damage, but Alonso was able to continue, although he dropped down to fifth.
Alonso took to his team radio to call Hamilton an "idiot" with the Spaniard adding: "This guy only knows how to drive when he starts in first place."
On commentary, Sky Sports F1's Martin Brundle also felt Hamilton was at fault, although the seven-time world champion escaped a penalty, which could have included a grid drop for the next in the Netherlands next weekend.
Meanwhile, fans on social media were divided over the incident, with one tweeting: "100% Hamilton at fault, can’t believe people think otherwise.".
A second added: "Hamilton's fault. Alonso's comments on the other hand – ridiculous" while a third said: "So poor from @LewisHamilton. Why pinch him, was ahead. What a terrible weekend."
But another fan argued: "Lewis was clearly ahead of Alonso on that corner. Everyone always expect Lewis to be the bigger man a concede."
