Lewis Hamilton has ‘two agreements’ with Mercedes as wait for contract continues

Lewis Hamilton is yet to put pen-to-paper on a new deal with Mercedes, with his current terms set to expire at the end of the year. But the 38-year-old already has two agreements with the Silver Arrows as the length of his new contract and his salary have already been signed-off, according to reports.

Hamilton tasted F1 silverware for the first time in 2008 with McLaren, despite only winning five Grands Prix that season. The blockbuster star then became the dominant force in the sport following his move to Mercedes and won six championships in seven years between 2014 and 2020.

Hamilton, who signed his last contract with the Silver Arrows in July 2021, has fallen down the F1 grid in recent years amid Red Bull’s dominance. But he appears to be as hungry as ever to win his eighth title to surpass Michael Schumacher at the top of the all-time title standings.

According to the official F1 website, neither Hamilton nor Mercedes chief Toto Wolff are stressed by the amount of time a new deal is taking to get over the line. The duo both insist money and the length of contract have been agreed. And Wolff has admitted that only “trivial things need to be cleaned up” before the contract is signed off.

Mercedes have struggled to compete with Red Bull over the last two years after F1 regulations for cars were changed following the conclusion of the 2021 season. Hamilton finished a lowly sixth in the standings in 2022 and is currently fourth in the pecking order this time around after failing to win a single Grand Prix since 2021.

After being asked by Sky Sports F1 last month whether Mercedes’ inconsistent recent form had made him reconsider signing a new deal with his current team, Hamilton said: “That’s not what I’m thinking. Before the end of the season we’ll be already well into the contract. I still have 100 per cent faith in this team.”

And the veteran later told the broadcaster: “I’m hoping to be here a lot longer. I feel like I’ve got another five years in me at least, no? Let’s see.”

Hamilton has spoken out about his contract again since then and has explained: “I’ve been removed from it from the beginning. I’ve been wanting to focus on all the other things I have going on. The team has been working on it in the background. There’s no negotiation left. It’s just all the small bits.”
