Lewis Hamilton recently jetted out to California to enjoy the festivities at Coachella – linking up once again with his good friend Miles Chamley-Watson as the public were given another glimpse into their relationship. The Olympic fencer joined Hamilton stateside to take in the music and culture, as the seven-time F1 world champion enjoyed some time away from the sport with his pal.
Chamley-Watson, 33, was born in London but moved to the USA as an eight-year-old and competed for America at the Olympics. In 2011 he earned himself top spot on the US Olympic fencing team as a foil fencer, after making his name at the Knox School and then Pennsylvania State University.
He competed in the 2012 Games in London, but was defeated in the second round by Egyptian Alaaeldin Abouelkassem who would go on to win a silver medal. A year later, however, he became the first American to win the World Championship.
Then in Brazil in 2016 Chamley-Watson claimed a bronze medal in the team event, while he still has ambitions of competing in 2024. In the meantime, he has been spotted partying with Hamilton in Coachella as the pair have often been pictured together – such is the close nature of their relationship.

They were seen alongside Justin Bieber in the American desert as they rubbed shoulders with global icons. Hamilton and Chamley-Watson first met at the 2016 Met Gala and have since been regulars at the event, while they also posted a picture together of the duo jogging at Byron Bay before last month’s Australian Grand Prix.
Hamilton had invited the fencing legend to the 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and 2019 Monaco Grand Prix and also went on a trip to Africa together during the challenging 2022 season in August, as the 38-year-old described the adventure as “a life-changing reset”.

The pair also previously challenged Serena Williams to a tennis match, though there could have been a rift when the fencer was at Red Bull’s unveiling of the RB19, but Hamilton’s words of encouragement in the photo’s comments on Instagram suggested otherwise.
While they have been willing to share a cryotherapy chamber together in temperatures as low as -200°C. Chamley-Watson did give an insight into their relationship as part of his birthday message to the Mercedes driver at the beginning of the year.
In January he wrote: “My brother. Happy Birthday. This is gonna be an incredible year for you I know it. Love man’s to the moon and back. Everyone go wish my bestie the best of birthdays! Man’s is also ageing backwards.”

Away from their relationship at partying at Coachella, Chamley-Watson is firmly focused on making fencing a more accessible sport while also relaying his ambitions to compete at the 2024 Olympics. “I have an Olympic gold to win and 2024 is around the corner,” he told Highsnobiety.
“For my sport, I think most of my foundation, which is going to promote fencing. We’re gonna take care of four to eight kids a year and pay for their training. Also, we’re gonna put on a couple competitions live next, actually, this year as well as next season on Facebook, NBC and Redbull TV.
So, think big. Fencing is never gonna be the same after I’m done with it. Exposure-wise, my goal is to get a million kids fencing. Also, just like bringing an audience to fencing. I don’t want the same kids fencing, I want to mix where kids come from. Rough backgrounds with kids who have privilege. I think that’s the way people grow and connect.”
