Max Verstappen has opened up on his relationship with Lewis Hamilton, after the pair collided at the British Grand Prix, admitting he doesn’t get ‘intimidated’ during his job.

Verstappen, who still leads the championship standings by eight points, collided with the seven-time world champion on the opening lap of the race at Silverstone, spearing into the tyre barrier at around 180mph, suffering a huge impact.

The Dutchman climbed out of the car unaided, however was transferred to a local hospital during the race for further checks.

Hamilton meanwhile incurred a ten-second time penalty for causing a collision but performed a stunning comeback to win the race in front of his home crowds.

The Mercedes performance was devastating for the Red Bull team, with not only Verstappen’s lead cut dramatically in the driver standings, but the Milton Keynes-based team also had their sizable lead cut to just four points.

Tensions were high after the race, with Red Bull furious, however now the dust has settled, Verstappen was more philosophical about his relationship with Hamilton.

“I don’t get intimidated,” he told the Daily Mail.

“There’s mutual respect. It’s just that we live different lives, so that limits how much we could meet away from the track anyway.

“I don’t pay any attention to mind games. These things don’t bother me. I just focus on the track in the best way possible. Anything beyond that is not relevant to me.

“But I don’t want to make any predictions about the season. It is difficult to call. So many things come into it.”

Off-track, Hamilton has collaborated with many fashion designers in his spare time, with a keen interest in music and designer clothes, naturally meaning he has spent a fair chunk of time in the past at celebrity events.

Yet Verstappen says he lives his life very differently from his main title rival.

“I wouldn’t hang out with celebs just for my profile,” he said.

“With some well-known people you can strike a good connection and build up a friendship, but I would only meet those I think are friends.

“I won’t call them mates when they are not mates, but just famous people. I want to spend time with family and real friends.

“I don’t spend too much time checking my Twitter or Instagram accounts to see how many followers I have or worry about how many ‘likes’ my posts get. I am not interested in that.

“If I am in Holland, which is not often, I mostly stay in the house, again with family and friends.”
