Max Verstappen has shown off his new Red Bull gear as he prepares to defend his F1 drivers’ title this season. Verstappen, 24, won his maiden title in sensational style last year, overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of a controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to be crowned champion.

Whether the two drivers will be embroiled in a similar title battle this season remains to be seen, with Hamilton awaiting the outcome of an FIA enquiry into events at the Yas Marina Circuit, with race director Michael Masi under pressure to step down.

However, with the season opener taking place in Bahrain on March 20, time is running out for the British driver to clarify his future, especially given Mercedes would need to seek a replacement if he retired.

There are no doubts over the future of Verstappen of course, who is embarking on his seventh straight campaign with Red Bull after switching over from Toro Rosso in 2016.

And the Dutchman has already been kitted out for his tilt at back-to-back championships, taking to Twitter to reveal his new helmet design.

“NEW SEASON, NEW NUMBER, NEW HELMET” he wrote. “Very happy to show you all my new helmet for the 2022 season! It’s the small details that make the difference.”

He also included a sales pitch for the team, adding “1:2 & 1:4 2022 scale models available soon. Pre-register now to be the first to know,” and providing a link for customers looking to make a purchase.

The @redbullmotors account went into further detail, tweeting a short video clip of Verstappen addressing fans whilst wearing his new overalls, alongside the line “A new look in 2022 for Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing.”

During the clip, Verstappen delves into a bag to unveil his new headgear, and said “Bit more gold, as you can see, even ‘Gives you wings’ is in gold.

“So that looks really cold. The line fully in gold, and as you can see of course the number one on the back spoiler.”

Verstappen explained that he didn’t want the design to change drastically, but was happy for the alterations to the colours to be made.

“So instead of the red you could see before, it’s now basically fully gold everywhere, with some tiny little details that improve it. There’s a little bit more design into it.”

He did however, admit to specifically requesting one special addition to mark his new status as world champion.

“I, of course, asked for the little star on the back to mark the championship win,” he said, whilst pointing out the new feature.

Verstappen, who concluded by saying the new helmet was “a little bit cooler,” will begin his title defence in Bahrain on March 20.

It’s not just clothing gear he’ll have to get used to though, with new technical regulations coming into sport for the 2022 campaign.
