Sebastian Vettel’s angry, X-rated response to Lando Norris crash

Sebastian Vettel launched an angry, X-rated tirade at officials after Lando Norris crashed to delay qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix.

In torrential conditions during Q3, McLaren driver Norris appeared to lose the rear in the middle of the Eau Rouge section before over-correcting himself and careering into the barriers.

Instantly the red-flag came out before Norris, 21, confirmed he was "ok" over team radio – but did appear to be holding his arm as he was helped away from his car by medics.

And the incident clearly angered Vettel, who just minutes earlier had urged race director Michael Masi to red flag the session after citing "too much water" on the track.

"Yeah. Well. What the **** did I say, what did I say?," ranted the Aston Martin driver over radio.

"Red flag. It's unnecessary, is he (Lando Norris) ok?"

Norris himself had also complained of cars aquaplaning and after seeing the damaged car Vettel, 34, proceeded to pull alongside the British driver and check on his welfare.

The move drew praise on social media with F1 journalist Jennie Gow tweeting: "Vettel is out and out a very good man."

RACER mag writer Chris Medland said: "Vettel came across to Norris and put his thumb up to check he was alright. Norris gave him the same gesture back. They were the two drivers who we heard reference how bad they thought conditions were."

The session was held up for around 45 minutes and when things re-started it was Max Verstappen who thrillingly took poll, pushing George Russell into second place with Lewis Hamilton third.

Vettel himself ended up fifth and afterwards, said he didn't think the session should have started given the adverse conditions.

"I think we need to find a way to listen more to information we already have.

"I think the truth is the session shouldn’t have started at all. There are plenty of things we could have done better. It’s better to be safe one time too many than one time too little.

"We delayed the session in the beginning when there was less water."

McLaren has since issued a statement confirming Norris was taken to hospital as a precaution.

"Lando was checked at the trackside medical centre and then sent to a local hospital for a precautionary x-ray of his elbow. A further update will be issued in due course."
