Verstappen crashes in Saudi GP qualifying to gift pole to title rival Hamilton

There was drama in the final moments of qualifying for Sunday’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as Formula One leader Max Verstappen crashed at the final turn.

The Dutchman looked set to secure yet another place at the front of the grid for the penultimate race of the 2021 F1 campaign, however hit the wall on his last turn to leave his car stuck in the middle of the Jeddah track.

Verstappen’s costly error means his arch title rival Lewis Hamilton is the man to take pole position for tomorrow’s all-important race, as he looks to chase down the Dutchman at the top of the drivers’ standings.

Valtteri Bottas will start tomorrow's race in second, while Verstappen qualified in third despite the crash – although he could yet face a grid penalty if his car needs significant repairs as a result of the crash.
