Everything you need to know before State of Origin I

NSW will be chasing a fourth State of Origin triumph in five years when the series kicks off at Accor Stadium on Wednesday night.

Blues coach Brad Fittler made a number of surprise selection calls in naming his 18-man squad, dropping Origin veterans Jake Trbojevic and Josh Addo-Carr, and overlooking Stephen Crichton in favour of Canberra’s Jack Wighton to partner debutant Kotoni Staggs in the centres.

Crichton and Parramatta’s Ryan Matterson will make their Blues debuts off the bench, while Panthers pair Jarome Luai and Nathan Cleary will lock horns with Cameron Munster and Daly Cherry-Evans in the halves.

Tom Trbojevic scored three tries and Latrell Mitchell two in the Blues’ thumping win in game one of last year’s series, but both will be missing through injury.

Wednesday night’s clash will be the first chance for NSW fans to see their Blues in action on home turf since their game two win at Accor Stadium (Stadium Australia) in November 2020. You can purchase tickets from Ticketek via the NRL website.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of game one, from kick off time to key match-ups as Origin returns to Sydney.
