The Titans have been dealt a huge blow for the start of the NRL season with gun fullback AJ Brimson ruled out of Friday night’s Round 1 clash against the Raiders in Canberra.

Brimson has failed to recover from a stress fracture in his back in time and will miss the Gold Coast’s season-opener against last year’s beaten grand finalists.

Titans prop Shannon Boyd will also not play against his former club as he battles to overcome a shoulder injury.

The absence of Brimson is a blow to a Titans team which has shown promising signs during the pre-season.

Brimson will be replaced at fullback by Phillip Sami, with Dragons recruit Jonus Pearson to make his club debut on the wing.

Prop Moeaki Fotuaika, the Titans’ reigning player-of-the-year, is hoping to overcome a knee injury in time for the Raiders game.

Hooker Mitch Rein has beaten former NSW Origin rake Nathan Peats to the No. 9 jersey, with Peats to start on the bench.

Utility Tyrone Peachey is also set to start in the centres after producing an impressive pre-season.

The timeframe for Brimson’s return is unclear, with the back injury flaring after the NRL Nines last month.

Brimson did not feature in any other trial games for the Titans and has been on restricted duties at training.
