Two conditions behind blockbuster deal

The Roosters are closing in on a deal to bring Sharks centre Josh Morris to the club for the 2020 season, but there are still two main sticking points in negotiations.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Sharks are chasing a six-figure transfer fee, while they also want to keep Morris for the early rounds of the season to help them through an injury crisis.

Roosters chairman Nick Politis and Sharks counterpart Dino Mezzatesta are close to coming to terms on the matter.

Cronulla want to be compensated for paying four months of Morris’ 2020 wages, before letting him join a rival club.

The Sharks are chasing a figure of around $100,000 and also want to hold onto Morris while Matt Moylan recovers from calf and hamstring injuries.

The Sharks are keen to offload Morris’ salary after the NRL cut $350,000 from their 2020 cap for breaches dating back to 2013.

The Roosters are keen to sign Morris after losing Latrell Mitchell to the Rabbitohs and Billy Smith to a season-ending injury.

Morris is keen to reunite with twin brother Brett at the Tri-colours and chase an elusive premiership in the twilight of his career.

Angus Crichton is currently the favourite to partner Joey Manu in the centres for Round 1 as the Roosters chase a third straight premiership.

The Sharks are well stocked with centre options, with Jesse Ramien and Bronson Xerri the favourites to secure starting spots long-term and Josh Dugan also at the club.

It means a move for Morris is mutually beneficial to both clubs provided they can reach an agreement on terms.
