Yvonne Sampson slams Darius Boyd’s tone deaf gender reveal for ‘hijacking’ Broncos’ ‘darkest time’

Yvonne Sampson has blasted Darius Boyd and the Broncos for hijacking the club’s darkest hour for his own personal moment with his infamous gender reveal stunt.

The Broncos secured a historic wooden spoon in their Round 20 loss to the Cowboys, but all the talk after the match centred on the players celebrating with Boyd after he kicked a pink ball to reveal he and wife Kayla were having a daughter.

Long-time Broncos fan and Fox League journalist Sampson was floored by the stunt that came minutes after the Broncos worst ever season wrapped.

“I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” Yvonne Sampson said on The Big Sports Breakfast.

“It was just such a talking point. I’m not one for sharing personal information anyway so it is definitely not my go.

“But as Broncos fan first and foremost and I’m not an expert and I haven’t played NRL, but when I saw what was a really difficult time and the darkest time that club has gone through in its 32 year history, for it to then be hijacked for a personal promotion of a gender reveal just really caught me off guard.

“The tone of it was completely wrong.”

Broncos chairman Karl Morris blasted the stunt due to the fact none of the key power brokers at the club knew it was coming, which was the most disappointing aspect for Sampson.

“When you hear from chairman Karl Morris that it was done in a secretive manner and that they were embarrassed and disgusted by the gender reveal and the celebrations that came after it,” Sampson said.

“The whole thing and the tone of it was so off.

“I am very happy for Darius and Kayla and their wonderful family but that was not the time nor the place for it.”

Boyd’s actions were made all the more difficult to stomach given that he hadn’t shown much interest in celebrating his final week in the game with the media, according to Sampson.

“Given that Darius had been so difficult that week anyway. He wasn’t going to talk to any of the media and he wasn’t going to fulfil any of the duties,” Sampson said.

THE MATTY JOHNS PODCAST Bottom 8 Season Review & Finals Preview

Matty, Paul Kent and Blocker rate the bottom eight’s seasons out of 10, look at the best players, turning points and how they think they’ll go next year.

“He wasn’t going to address any of the players and corporates after such an incredible career.

“He didn’t feel comfortable doing all that and yet he felt comfortable booting a pink ball in the middle of something that just didn’t fit.

“As a fan I was like are these blokes kidding? Do they think that this is OK? The optics of it was so off.”

The incident capped a tough year for the retiring Broncos legend, but Sampson believes that Boyd did himself no favours by failing to give his all for his struggling team and teammates in their most turbulent season.

“I think internally the Broncos were very disappointed with Darius’ lack of input and lack of leadership and direction when it was needed most this year,” Sampson said.

“I know the club were really let down by Darius’ attitude and it was because they took the captaincy off him because they were trying to build for the future.

“Billy Slater said taking the captaincy off Darius broke his spirit, but I’m sorry if you can’t take that knock and put that second and put the team first then that is priority number one.

“If you can’t say well I might not have the ‘C’ next to my name, but I can still be a leader out here.

“There were times this year where he was not interested and you could tell he was just winding down the clock.”
