Ali Adnan produced one of the worst-ever Panenka penalties as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Los Angeles Galaxy claimed victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
When the Whitecaps were awarded a penalty inside the first 45 seconds of Friday night’s MLS contest – when Lass Bangoura was fouled by Jorgen Skjelvik – it appeared the perfect chance to take an early lead.
But Iraq international Adnan, on loan at Vancouver from Italian club Udinese, was too clever for his own good.

Despite it being just the second minute, Adnan decided to go for the cheeky Panenka spot-kick
But despite Galaxy goalkeeper David Bingham already committing to the save, Adnan fails to get the necessary power on his Panenka
The ball’s slow pace allows Bingham to adjust and return to the centre of the goalmouth

Attempting the chipped Panenka spot-kick favoured by so many players, Adnan got it all wrong, failing to get enough elevation or power on his shot.
It meant that LA goalkeeper David Bingham, who had already committed to diving to his left, was left with more than enough time to adjust and grab the barely moving ball.
Adnan looked incredibly sheepish as he turned away as the crowd at the BC Place Stadium watched on in horror.

The penalty miss proved costly for Vancouver as LA eventually won the contest 2-0
It was only the defender’s second appearance for the Whitecaps, having made his debut in last weekend’s goalless draw with the Seattle Sounders.
Galaxy star Ibrahimovic, a master of the Panenka penalty, must have chuckled to himself and the Swede did have the last laugh later in the contest.

He neatly controlled a cross on his chest and hammered home a half-volley to double Galaxy’s lead in the 71st minute after Daniel Steres opened the scoring eight minute earlier.
The 2-0 win keeps the Galaxy second in the Western Conference standings five matches into the season, with only local rivals LAFC ahead of them.
Adnan, meanwhile, was roundly ridiculed on Twitter, with one person calling it a ‘Panenkatastrophe’.
