Rangers legend Ally McCoist has again criticised Steven Gerrard for the way he departed Ibrox for Aston Villa. Gerrard was appointed Villa head coach on Thursday morning, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal. Ahead of the appointment, McCoist accused the Liverpool legend of lacking “manners” by not releasing an early statement regarding his future.

And now McCoist says he fully understands anger from Rangers supporters towards Gerrard’s departure.

The former Gers boss says Gerrard will always be remembered for winning the club’s first Scottish Premiership title in a decade and preventing Old Firm rivals Celtic from winning 10 in a row.

But McCoist says it is not a good look for the 41-year-old just weeks after stating he would be staying at the club.

“What Steven achieved was arguably the most important title for Rangers fans in the last 25-30 years,” McCoist said on talkSPORT.

“That’s how important it was, make no mistake about it. Stopping Celtic do 10 is as high on the list as you can possibly get.

“But, brutally honest, there is a bad taste in some of the supporters’ mouths about the way it’s happened.

“Particularly after that interview you just played.”

The interview McCoist was referring to was Gerrard’s post-match debrief on BT Sport following the 2-0 Europa League win over Brondby on October 21.

Gerrard was asked by Emma Dodds about speculation over his future, with the former England captain linked with the vacancy at Newcastle.

He responded: “Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don’t ask me silly questions then.”

McCoist says that interview has made things worse for Gerrard following his exit from Rangers.

And he can understand why some Rangers supporters are seething over what’s happened this week.

McCoist continued: “Emma asked the question, as she should, that’s her job.

“The answer kind of implied ‘I’m going nowhere’. I think we can all agree on that.

“He was very forthright, bordering on answering Emma in a fashion like: ‘It’s a silly question, I’m absolutely going nowhere’. And maybe two weeks later, he clearly has gone somewhere.

“So I can totally understand the frustration and disappointment, and maybe anger with some of the Rangers fans.

“However, like I said, you cannot argue the fact that Steven delivered the most important title in a long, long, long time for Rangers.”
