‘If he doesn’t score 50 goals, people talk’: Ander Herrera sympathises with PSG team-mate Lionel Messi after his underwhelming first season in France… but insists the Argentine is still the best player of all time
- Ander Herrera has claimed Lionel Messi is criticised if he doesn’t score 50 goals
- The Paris Saint-Germain star endured a tough first season in the French capital
- Forward Messi, 35, only scored six Ligue 1 goals in an underwhelming campaign
- But team-mate Herrera leapt to the veteran’s defence in a passionate interview
- The former Manchester United midfielder insisted Messi is the best player ever
Ander Herrera has insisted Lionel Messi is the best footballer in history – and said the Argentine would get criticised unless he scores 50 goals a season.
The veteran forward, 35, sensationally swapped Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain last summer, but endured a difficult first season, only scoring six league goals.
But Herrera told Spanish outlet AS his goals total could have been much higher had he not hit the woodwork 10 times – and claimed there was no doubt in his mind about Messi’s ‘GOAT’ status.

He said: ‘You are asking for 50 goals per season. From there, if he doesn’t score them, people talk.
‘Nor should we forget that Leo has had the all-time record in Ligue 1 – he has hit the post 10 times! If he had scored 10 more goals, it would (have) been a very good season for Leo.
‘But for me, he is the best of all time, without any discussion. Now I admire him even more for how he manages his day to day life with total humility, (and) always with a smile for people.’
But Herrera has insisted there is no doubt in his mind that Messi is the greatest footballer ever
And former Manchester United midfielder Herrera, 32, continued by saying star forward Kylian Mbappe – who signed a massive new three-year deal this summer – can help to get the best out of Messi next season.
He added: ‘Kylian can get a lot out of Leo. He is going to put the ball in the right place and with his speed he will go toe-to-toe with the goalkeeper, where he is lethal.
‘Perhaps Messi is no longer (needing) 50 goals at the present time. It’s like Cristiano (Ronaldo), they never lower their level.’
