Antoine Griezmann 'targets 100 more games at the Nou Camp'

Antoine Griezmann ‘targets 100 more games at the Nou Camp’ after notching his first century of appearances… despite Barcelona desperately trying to offload the £294,000-a-week forward as they look to wipe £1.15BILLION debt

  • Griezmann hit the milestone on Sunday in Barcelona’s win over Real Sociedad
  • The forward is 14 goals away from equalling Thierry Henry’s club tally
  • The Frenchman is one of the highest earners and is under contract until 2024
  • Barcelona proposed a swap deal with Atletico Madrid for midfielder Saul Niguez

Antoine Griezmann has set his sights on the next 100 games with Barcelona, despite reported interest from Atletico Madrid and Manchester City this summer.

The Frenchman is targeting the long-term stay at the Nou Camp after reaching the milestone this weekend.

The forward hit the century mark after he started in the Blaugrana’s 4-2 season-opening win against Real Sociedad on Sunday.

But Barcelona are desperate to shift Griezmann to ease their financial difficulties.

‘I am proud and happy to have reached this figure,’ Griezmann told the club’s official site.

‘I hope I get to play another 100 games and carry on giving everything to make history with this club,’ he added.

‘I want to keep helping the team both on and off the pitch, in attack and defence, and enjoying being at Barca.’

Of his 100 appearances, 78 have been in LaLiga, with 16 in the Champions League, nine in the Copa del Rey and three in the Spanish Super Cup.

Griezmann has scored 35 goals in his 100 games for Barcelona since arriving in 2019, needing 14 more to equal Thierry Henry’s record of 49 as the club’s all-time leading French goal scorer.

However, it is no secret Barcelona are struggling under the pressure of their £1.15billion debt after the club was forced to let Lionel Messi leave for PSG as they could no longer foot the bill of his wages.

Griezmann is one of the club’s highest earners pocketing £294,000 per week and the Catalans are desperate to get him off their books.

The World Cup winner arrived at the Nou Camp at an arguably cut-price deal of £108m from Atletico Madrid.

But with his mammoth wages and three years left on his contract Barcelona need to shift him in order to make a dent in their debt.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta signalled the club’s interest in selling the 30-year-old

Barcelona have signalled they are open to selling the 30-year-old amid interest from Atletico and City earlier in the window.

‘Griezmann is a player that has a market, with clubs interested, and we are building the squad searching for a financial equilibrium,’ president Joan Laporta said, as cited by Mundo Deportivo.

‘With Antoine, we don’t have any problem, we love him. But if the market moves, we are open to all offers because we are in a delicate moment where we have to balance financial fair play and because of that, we should speak with all the players so that it does not hurt them, or (if it does) for the least time possible.

‘We are making these balances and are open to all the options that the market can give us, but we don’t want to harm the team competitively.’

Barcelona proposed a swap deal that would see them secure Saul Niguez (right) for Griezmann

The forward (right) remains a first-team player but has been linked to his former side Atletico

Although he remains a first-team player and will be heavily relied upon by Ronald Koeman with Lionel Messi no longer at the club, it hasn’t stopped the Catalans looking to cash in on him this summer.

Juventus, City and Chelsea have all been linked in to the forward but it was a sensational return to the Wanda Metropolitano that grabbed headlines.

Barcelona proposed a swap deal for midfielder Saul Niguez which would see Griezmann return to the Spanish capital.

The Blaugrana also reportedly attempted a swap deal with City naming Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva or Aymeric Laporte as the four players they would be interested in.
