Argentina players are reportedly furious over the decision to move the Copa America from their country to Brazil and have voiced their concerns with players from other countries.

The country had their rights to host the tournament removed from them on Monday, less than two weeks before the competition was set to start, due to a record number of coronavirus cases emerging last week and the death toll rising to nearly 77,000 last weekend.

Brazil was named as the new hosts for the tournament, which will welcome 10 South American countries between June 13 and July 10, despite the nation suffering 450,000 Covid-19-related deaths and a similar infection rate to Argentina.

It was announced on Monday that Brazil would host the tournament which starts next week

And according to ESPN Brasil, players from Argentina have discussed their objections about the move with players from other countries but are resigned to playing in Brazil if necessary due to the short notice.

It was originally planned for Colombia to co-host the event with Argentina but the tournament was stripped from them on May 20 due to ongoing political protests there.

Now Argentina’s role as hosts has been removed just days after the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) suspended all football activity for nine days to combat a second wave of coronavirus in the country.

New Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero, who completed a move from Manchester City earlier this week, blasted South American football’s governing body CONMEBOL for changing their minds on the situation so frequently.

The forward said: ‘From what I heard in Brazil they have closed the borders too. It is very difficult to give an opinion. We the players want to play. It is clear. The issue is to find a good place to play.

‘We have to play it, there is no time – we already lost last year. There was a year to find a place where it could be done and what could happen. Every month, two months everything changes.’

The sheer number of coronavirus cases in Brazil has caused a variant from the country to emerge. The strain, known as P.1, has spread to more than ten countries across the world – including the United Kingdom.

This year’s Copa America is set to be held in four Brazilian cities – Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Goiania and Cuiaba.
