Arsenal and Man City hero Toure picks which team deserves to win title

Man City boss Guardiola 'takes hat off' to Arsenal in Premier League title race

Kolo Toure believes that Arsenal ‘deserve’ to win the Premier League title this season, despite admitting that the momentum is with another of his former clubs – Manchester City. The two rivals will meet at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, with the winner poised to take a massive step towards the trophy.

Toure won two Premier League titles during a distinguished playing career. His first was with Arsenal in 2004 as he formed an integral part of Arsene Wenger’s famous side that went the whole season unbeaten, while his second was with City in 2012 as they dramatically came from behind to beat QPR on the final day.

Despite having fond memories of playing for both the Gunners and the Sky Blues, the former centre-back believes that Arsenal are deserving of this year’s crown, which would deny City their fifth title in the past six campaigns.

“I believe that Arsenal is in the right way,” he told media, including Express Sport. “Everything they do, in my opinion, they deserve to win the league this season – with the way they’ve been carrying themselves, they’ve been leading, they’ve been in front, they’ve been playing unbelievable football, the passion they bring to the club, they’ve doing everything well until the last few games.

“I believe they are in the right way. That might be this season because nothing is done yet. There’s a big game on Wednesday. They have a big opportunity. If they win that game, it will give them unbelievable energy. For sure, they are not far, because what they and [Mikel] Arteta are doing is incredible.”

Arsenal had a commanding lead until three consecutive Premier League draws this month left the door ajar for City. Now, Guardiola’s side are five points behind but they are in better form and have two games in hand.

City may also carry the psychological advantage into Wednesday’s highly-anticipated showdown, having won the reverse fixture 3-1 back in February. Star striker Erling Haaland is in rampant form for the Sky Blues, and he is one away from becoming the standalone all-time leader for goals scored in a single 38-game Premier League season.

Therefore, despite claiming that Arsenal are deserving of the top prize this term, Toure admits that City may have the edge as the season draws to a close. “At the moment, Man City have the momentum,” he added.

“They’re winning every game they play and momentum is very important. The Arsenal players, now, in their head, there is a lot of doubt there. It’s not easy right now. Especially as they have young players.

“Of course they have players from City who have been winning. But most of the team haven’t won a title yet. It’s quite difficult. My opinion would be Man City [to win the league] right now. Because the momentum is with City.”
